How Important is marketing, synergy, and cross media convergence to the success of Thor 2?

Marketing, Synergy, and cross media convergence is very important to the success of Thor 2.

Marketing is the the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising. On average around £30 - £40 million is spent on the marketing of a film. Film studios are businesses so they are motivated by profits. In order to ensure profitable returns most major studio films are supported by large marketing campaigns.

Cross media convergence is when two or more different companies come together to release media content for a film. This includes releasing different content for a film across different platforms. Examples of cross media convergence that Thor 2 has used would be through X-Factor, Comics, Lego's, Playstation. Apple store applications, Podcasts, Soundtracks and Other Marvel films such as Avengers, Iron Man etc..

Synergy is when two or more companies work successfully together, with each company each contributing, so they all make bigger profits. An example of synergy used in Thor 2 was through the cohesive marketing campaign of "Blue Shades", Thunder etc.

SUMMARY

We used convergent technologies in production, distribution, marketing and exchange.
We were also introduced to tentpole moves.Tentpole movies are expected to hold up (as is the function of a tentpole) and balance out the financial performance of a movie studio or television network.
We were also prosumers. Not only did we consume information from the internet we also produced our own stuff. It was a two way process. We also learnt about cross media convergence and its similarities with synergy. Cross media convergence is different media that promote each other and usually wont exist without each other. Only media companies are allowed so teaming up with food companies such as mcdonalds wouldn't be cross media. Types of synergy are podcasts, posters etc. You can have visual synergy through imagery and fonts Synergy exists to make both products more revenue. We learnt about the importance of audience participation and learnt that by uploading to youtube we were distributing our media globally.
